Everybody loves the Old Mill Chicken.

Here are some poultry terms you'll want to know:
Most people know that baby chickens are called chicks, but did you know that female chicks are called pullets and male chicks are called cockerels?  A pullet becomes a hen only after she has produced her first egg.  A mature cockerel is a rooster.
Baby ducks are ducklings, baby geese are goslings, and baby turkeys are poults.

Call them what you want, watching them will bring a smile, guaranteed!

Hay!  What's Going On?
Remember when finding good quality hay for your livestock was the least of your worries?  Not any more.  Local hay has remained in short supply since the winter of 2006.  Low yields and high demand since that time have worsened the situation.  Currently, local hay supplies are pretty skimpy.  We bought all the local grass hay we could find last summer, but who knows how long our supply will last.
What can be done?  Here's what we're doing:
We have a steady stream of 80 lb alfalfa and orchard grass bales coming to us from Central Oregon.  Our supplier is working hard to keep ahead of the demand.  Will we have enough?  We hope so, but our crystal ball is a little cloudy at times.
We have also secured a supply of alfalfa and timothy hay from Idaho.  This is a high-quality hay.  It's being shipped to us in small, 55-58 lb compressed bales that are easy to handle.
We stock a number of complete horse feeds, including Purina Equine Senior, Allegra Senior, and Equilux Complete.  These are complete feeds, meaning additional roughage (grass hay) is not necessary.
In the meantime, if you have a pasture, take care of it!  Fall is a great time to lime, fertilize, and reseed.  With hay prices escalating, why not make the most of what you already have?
Be assured that we'll do our best to keep hay available.

There was a time when many feeds were medicated for this or that.  Despite all the promises, a few people doubted the "better life through chemistry" approach.  Today, our customers tend to look for better nutrition and fewer medications.  We feature Purina, Nutri-Lux and Equi-Lux feeds to meet the needs of animals raised here in the Willamette Valley.
